So Long, Rick!

We were back in the studio on Monday afternoon for a few hours. I haven't been happy with the color application of my last couple of votives so I switched to the Swedish overlay method and got much better results.

We've only been at Foci again for a few weeks but I'm feeling like I'm nearly back to where I was before we took those nine months off. I really enjoy making the candle votives I've been playing around with but I do need to do some other shapes, too. I have a request from a friend for a larger mouth vase so maybe I'll put some thought into that as well but I don't think I'll stop doing the votives anytime soon.

I'm sitting at 246 days remaining in my career as an air traffic controller. Using this nifty calendar I can count back that same number of days and get a better feel for just how long 246 days is. This was us that many days ago. It's happening quickly now but I'm feeling ready.

Speaking of retiring: Rick Melhorn has left the building after having reached the mandatory retirement age of 56. A nicer guy you will not meet. I've worked on and off with Rick for the last 30 years. A retirement party was organized for him at one of the local pubs in town. It was nice to see such a good turnout.

Jeff Boyce even made the trip from Milwaukee to celebrate Rick's retirement. Jeff used to work with us until about 25 years ago when he decided to move closer to home and took a job at Milwaukee tower from where he recently retired. Jeff was the controller who took the initial emergency call from the ill-fated United-two-thirty-two. It was nice to see him but I wish we'd have had more time to chat.

Rachel texted us tonight with a link to a site that tries to calculate the age of people in photographs. Go to How-Old.net and submit a photo or two. Tammy's gonna love me for this one!

I've been out on my bike just a couple of times this week and because I can, I've got some video from both rides. I made it out Tuesday morning with some (much younger!) friends from work and did my best to not let my age show. I did okay.



I was also out yesterday morning before work doing my Hampton Loop. I felt pretty good out there and was able to keep my watts well above 200 for much of it.

I got up from laying down after the all-night shift Thursday morning and figured I'd better get a ride in while I could because the forecast wasn't looking so good. The temp was just above 40 with a northeast wind steady at 15 mph under overcast skies. 40 degrees is very reasonable cycling weather but the key is to be somewhat chilled when you start out. Being warm and toasty at the beginning leads to being sweaty, cold and clammy before the ride is over. While putting air in my tires before leaving I could tell that I needed a lighter top layer. I'm glad I made the switch. I loved the ride  ( Strava link ) and would like to have gone further but David Crowder was playing at our church and I didn't want to be late getting in line for some good seats as it was general admission. Riding, Retirement and a Home Revisited

I skipped out of work a couple hours early today to take advantage of some mild weather. I took the pups for a walk then headed west on my bike putting my heart, lungs, and quads through some paces. It felt so nice to be out there. I'd have stayed out longer but I had to be back to take Rachel to dance class for 5:00. It's possible that today will be the last time I'll have to take her to class if she passes her road test this Thursday. I'd like to have taken some time to hose down my bike. It's full of road salt and that can't be a good thing. Every large vehicle that went past me had a cloud of salt dust trailing in its wake and settling on me. I'll spend some time cleaning it tomorrow and have it ready for a ride on Wednesday after work. Speaking of work—I've been kicking around the idea of bidding on a staff job. A Tragic Loss

I received a phone call from my sister-in-law two weeks ago this morning. Tracee was sobbing heavily but I could make out that she had some terrible news to tell me. For a moment, I imagined that my brother Keith had passed away and she was letting me know. It wasn't that. Their grandson Madden had died the night before after a fall off his bike. I didn't press her for details and we soon ended the call. I was so stunned by what I'd just heard. Madden had just turned 13 and he meant the world to Keith and Tracee as well as to his mother and father and so many others who were part of his life. Madden's life cut so short is nothing less than a tragic loss. Here's a news report from one of our local stations. I didn't know Madden well but I was able to spend time on the golf course with him last summer and fall with Joe (his father) and Keith.
